Think outside the square (tile) for mosaic art designs
When you think of mosaic art, do you picture a mural hanging on the wall? Think again. There are many different types of mosaic art – it’s such a versatile artistic form.
Over the years, we have created mosaic kitchens, bathrooms, ‘carpets’, outdoor walls, plinths, statues, house numbers and wood-fired pizza oven mosaics – and that’s just to name a few!
Wherever there is a surface, a mosaic can be grouted onto it.
The different types of mosaic art
There are so many diverse ways to implement a mosaic in and around your home – read on for some different mosaic art examples.
Mosaics for the kitchen and bathroom
Mosaics stand out in the kitchen, adding a bright drop of colour when hung on a wall or displayed behind shiny utensils.
Adding a mosaic that’s integral to the kitchen really steps things up – and one of the simplest ways to do that is to create a splashback for the sink.
Whether it’s using a simple tesserae design of square tiles, or something more intricate using hand cut pieces, a mosaic splashback provides a focal point for the rest of the kitchen.
It’s one of the best ways to create a unique look for your kitchen that’ll get lots of comments from visitors – trust us!
Bathroom splashbacks can also add a touch of difference to the usual white tiles – and if you use neutral colours to create a classic design it will serve you well for many years.
Mosaic carpet flooring
The ancient Romans loved mosaics, and they REALLY loved mosaic floors.
Some of the most stunning archaeological finds have been mosaic floors, preserved under deep layers of dirt. When cleaned up, they almost look as beautiful as they did when they were first laid.
You too can add a mosaic floor to your modern-day home, creating a design that looks absolutely stunning all year round. Over the years we have installed mosaic carpets onto outside pavers, butler’s pantries, inside shower recesses and inside hallway entrances.
A mosaic carpet is a bold and striking to create a distinctive look for the room it adorns, and it will certainly be the centrepiece of the space.
Everyone who steps into the room will marvel at an artwork you can walk on! And you’ll often find that guests will ask if they can walk on it. The wonderful thing about mosaic art is that it’s very durable and will last for decades – even with feet stomping all over the artwork!
Mosaic art designs for the outdoors
One of the most exciting projects we’ve ever undertaken was to create a shower floor, decorative splashback and seating surface for an outdoor bathroom.
The owner of the home commissioned us to create a ‘Gaudi’ inspired work which we relished in, crafting a design using a palette of blues and whites.
The project took many months of piecing to finish, gluing mosaic tiles to mesh which was then carefully laid into place on both vertical and horizontal surfaces.
Like a jigsaw puzzle, each section locked in with the next, forming a complete pattern that covered the surfaces with a dazzling array of colours.
When it was all done it looked stunning, and our clients tapped a bath that very night and enjoyed a glass of bubbles while they relaxed in some bubbles under the stars.
Outdoor mosaics can often be larger and more complex than interior mosaic art designs but offer a robust way to create art that will weather the elements over a great many years.
They can be added to pools, cabanas and outdoor kitchens.
What do you think of these mosaic art examples? Has it given you some inspiration to install an artwork in a special spot in your home or garden that you’d never previously considered?
